What do Catholics Believe?

Home  /  What do Catholics Believe?

While the Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination in the world, it is sometimes also the most misunderstood. The beliefs of the Catholic Church and it’s beautiful teachings have remained consistent through the ages. Catholics believe that human beings were created by God in love and that everything God creates is good and born of that love. Although we have the capacity for sin, the Church upholds the dignity of the human person and continually invites us back to God through His mercy and reconciliation.

Catholics also embrace stewardship, recognizing that everything we have is given by God and that we are called to share our time, talent, and treasure with others. We profess faith in the Holy Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—a communion of knowledge and love into whose life we are invited. We believe that God loved his creation so much that he became human in the person of Jesus Christ to walk among us. We honor the communion of the saints as models of faith who guide and intercede for us, and we proclaim Jesus’ crucifixion, death, and resurrection with the hope that we too will one day rise to new life with him. Becoming Catholic today means joining an ancient faith that is deeply rooted in the teachings and traditions of Christ, and is alive with hope and vibrancy as we continue to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth.

Nicene Creed

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,

God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God, begotten not made, one in being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven;

by the power of the Holy Spirit
he was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered, died, and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in fulfillment of the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified.
He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.

Amen.
